I am not sure about your friend's JRT. There are many holistic products to help the heart, but a shaking leg is not usually a symptom of heart problems. There are many possible causes for leg shaking. Many JRTs do it their whole lives and owners say it is from the excess energy their have or the anxiety some have. When I had only my conventional training I could have done nothing until we had a diagnosis. You can do lots of things now without a specific diagnosis.l
1. I would start by keeping a journal (mine makes it very easy) and record when he does it. Also any other problems he has. Also use the Early Warning Signs (in the book and on the bookmark, or on this site) and record any of them.
2. Then try Reiki, or Rescue Remedy, or DMG from VetriScience.
3. If no help, or to be on the safe side, find a holistic veterinarian near you for a great exam or call me for a phone consult.

My Parsons Russell Terrier's legs shake from time to time. It seems to happen more frequently. A friend who has a Jack Russell told me, it is a heart condition and she uses a holistic product for her dog. It seems to be a common ailment in this breed. Have you had any experience in treating this condition before? Thank you.

When I only had my conventional veterinary training, Debbie, I would often be very frustrated by problems that had no clear cause, like grunting an many mild skin problems. The holistic philosophy has taught me that there is an underlying vibrational imbalance that causes most problems and the healing goal is to resolve that imbalance. The good news about this approach is we do not need to know what is causing the grunts, only when do they happen, and what triggers them and then to see if they resolve after treatment with different holistic modalities. To better understand this perspective, read the first few chapters of Don Hamilton's Homeopathic Care of Cats and Dogs or the few pages in my book, the Healthy Animal's Journal . Skin problems are actually a good thing. No dog dies from skin problems. If the vibrational field is healthy enough to produce skin symptoms instead of more serious illnesses (diabetes, Cushing’s, etc) this is good.
Now that the multitude of holistic modalities is available, I can tell you to never give up. Try one after the other, and record the changes with each. Maybe just following the 7 keys to health will heal your pup, but you may need to work with a number of practitioners.

You have 3 major approaches:
1.	Treat conventionally - it is unlikely that they can help, and possibly will make her worse.
2.	Try some self healing treatments listed below as these issues are not life threatening.
3.	If that does not help, work with an integrative veterinarian. Even if these symptoms resolve, use one for the very best chance of health and long life and less money spent by you on your new puppy. Many homeopaths can consult with you by phone (like me) if there is now one near you.

If you were trained in different healing modalities you could help by using Reiki, T-Touch, HTA, flower essences, supplements, homeopathy and more.
1. Even before you are trained in Reiki, you can ask for this energy healing that cannot hurt and may help. this may decrease itching if that is causing the red skin and hair loss. It is excellent for any emotional problems (I can only assume the grunting may be emotional). It is also excellent to rebalance the immune system/energy field imbalance (possibly from the vaccines) which could help the grunting.
2. Mitomax is a super probiotic that can improve nutrient absorption, so helps with all problems. Unlike other probiotics, it is very stable and is ok at the low stomach pH.
3. Rescue remedy from the health food store. Put one drop in a separate water bowl. Put 10 drops in a cup of water and rinse red areas. Put 4 drops in an ounce of water in a jar and give a few drops in every meal and every few hours in between. You cannot use it too often. It is totally safe. It is great for people too - for anxiety, stress, shock, grief and more.
4. Skin Soothe for the red skin, and Vaccine Detox from Spirit Essences for the possible damage from the vaccines. Flower essences are totally safe and can be used as long and as frequently as they seem to help. Remember that using a journal will help you figure out what is helping the most. There are many other companies and combinations you could try.
5. Derma Strength from VetriScience is a nutritional supplement that can be used long term to generally support the skin.
6. Most importantly, change to a raw meaty bone diet as this cures, or at least helps, about 60% of dogs with skin and general health problems who come to my practice.

Do read the 7 Keys to Healthy Animals for other general health care.

Be sure to come to some of the animal homeopathy classes offered in person or on the web. Check my events page - Portland - May 6 is a 4 hour introduction to homeopathy for animals; June 2 & 3 - in beautiful Maine; June 16-22 in Bowie, MD, near Washington DC - introduction and intermediate (you will leave knowing all the tools - repertory, materia medica - and the basic procedure used to select, administer and evaluate the response to remedies). The weekly blog radio show of the Homeopathy World community has recordings on homeopathy for animals.
Yes, stool eating is one of the Early Warning Signs of Energy Imbalance. The cure is to build up the overall health by following the & keys to healthy animals. Again, I would start with Mitomax probiotic and switch to a fresh food diet. Then I would suggest learning Reiki and offering that to the dog.

Becky, I am so glad you have stopped the dry food. No cat, in my opinion (and others do differ on this) should be fed dry food. An example of a veterinarian who changed her mind is Dr. Hodgkins, a veterinary nutritionist who was working for Hills Food company. She was feeding dry food to her cats, when Punkin, her middle aged cat, developed diabetes. She was devastated, then began to think as a veterinarian and a nutritionist. Hmmm…in people diabetes is linked to excess carbohydrate consumption…cats are obligate carnivores….I have been feeding carbohydrates (dry food)….ding ding ding – she switched to canned food and Punkin’s blood returned to normal. Two years later a boarding kennel refused to follow the directions to feed the meat canned food and fed dry. Punkin’s blood glucose shot up to 400 and she needed insulin for several weeks. Now Dr. Hodgkins has written – You and Your Cat and has several web sites.

Many conventional veterinarians do feel that dry food, even Science diet, causes bladder problems. The best diet for all cats is a raw meaty bone diet. Read more on this here.

Each cat may need different products to get them back into balance. First, how do you know she is out of balance at this point? Buying the Healthy Animal's Journal here can help you do this evaluation.
1. Look at the early warning signs to see any she has.
2. Now that you have stopped the dry food, monitor her thirst and urine output. A healthy cat rarely drinks unless forced to by dry food.
3. Possibly contact an animal intuitive (I have list if you email me to see if there is an energy field out of balance.

If she has any symptoms, following the 7 keys to healthy animals is a great first step. Then you can no look at all the different holistic approaches available and pick one with which to begin. Maybe you will choose to work with a practitioner in your area, maybe you will consult by phone. Maybe one modality will have local classes you can take. Reiki, HTA, TTouch, Flower Essences, essential oils, herbs, nutriceuticals, homeopathy, chiropractic or chinese medicine are some of the approaches that can bring her back to balance.

I would start with Mitomax to maximize nutrient absorption from the gut.

Then I would select one of the totally safe flower essences - maybe UR fine from Spirit Essences . The site says it "balances the energy system and encourages proper flow of fluids." Or UT Strength for Cats from Vetriscience - This maintains proper urinary tract function and supports the immune system."

Then it depends on your cat and how she responds.
