Food Safety News brings us this info on June 1, 2012. A 1977 ruling to remove several antibiotics from animal feed was never enforced. 5 non-profits filed a suit to get three antibiotics banned because this leads to antibiotic resistance in people and animals – it was upheld. Now FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius have filed an appeal in an attempt to overturn that decision. If the decision is upheld it still only means they have to look at the research.
How can you help your health given that laws are often not enforced? Buy local and know your farmer.
Food production has changed so very much of late. We all should think more carefully about what we choose to eat and how that food arrived on our plates. I am a big fan of Michael Pollan (http://michaelpollan.com/) for inspiration to try to eat whole and healthfully raised food. Seems as though the only winners are the attorneys in situations like this legal battle!
